Default Feeding keystrokes to linux via LIRC

I have a small machine that I control with a remote control using LIRC
<http://www.lirc.org>.

I also have an infrared keyboard that transmits on the same frequency as
the remote, so I'd like to set up LIRC to feed keystrokes to the computer,
both for console and X.

I don't have a clue where to start. I'm not a hardware or driver
programmer, so extensive coding is not in the cards. I'm looking for some
basic way to do this.
