Here is a section of my .profile pertaining to checking the mail:

MAILCHECK=60
#BOLD=`tput smso`
#NORMAL=`tput rmso`
BOLD=`tput bold`
NORMAL=`tput sgr0`
# No "!"s or "'"s allowed
MAILPATH=/var/spool/mail/njc?"${BOLD}Oh my god.${NORMAL} You've got mail. ${BOLD}You bastard.${NORMAL}"
#MAILPATH='/usr/spool/mail/njc?You have mail.'


Note I've commented out sections of the code as I used to do it a
different way.
