If your linux implementation has a dump/restore command then that should be possible, and you'll find the gory details on the man page. Having recently done a backup on an old SGI based on my Solaris ufsdump knowledge, I found that reading the specifics of the man page was really rather useful: one of those bits of UNIX where no two versions seem to be *quite* the same so the extra reading pays off.
