Default printing multiple copies of a page under CUPS

I have a Samsung ML-1210 laser printer attached to a Linux server
running CUPS. Usually I'm just printing short items but every now and
then I print several hundred copies of a single-page item, such as a
newsletter.

If I print from a Windows box, everything goes great. However, if I
print from a Linux box using the same software, the printer slows to a
crawl. It looks like the Windows driver is sending the page to the
printer then telling it to print multiple copies, while the Linux driver
seems to be sending the page to the printer for each copy.

I could be totally wrong on this, but for some reason there is a very
long delay between pages under Linux and it occurs whether I am using
OpenOffice or Acrobat or GPDF, etc.. The delay is long enough to rule
out printing multiple copies using Linux. I have to use Windows.
Needless to say, I find this arrangement unsatisfactory!

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?
