Our April 2004 meeting will be a Field Trip Meeting to IBM (see below). We also have two really great offers for new meeting facilities. One is at the offices of the Downtown Alliance (and the person in-charge is a long time Unigroup member, which greatly simplifies meeting planning), and the other is at a local downtown city college (large facilities, student participation). Unigroup would like to say THANKS to everyone who helped us with our search for new facilities. We have 3 meetings lined up, in addition to our Field Trip to IBM... Next month's meeting, on Thursday, May 20, 2004, will be a meeting on Kerberos, with a followup meeting (perhaps June or July) on OpenAFS. Our speaker for both of these meetings will be Jeff Altman. Unigroup members will remember that Jeff is a past Unigroup speaker (of Kermit95 and Telnet Security Working Group fame). Jeff is currently working on a series of projects: Project JXTA (Peer to Peer Semantic Overlay Networks), MIT Kerberos (Core Developer), OpenAFS.ORG (Gatekeeper), OpenSSL (contributor). Our planned meeting on Zope (Web Development) is being rescheduled, and our speakers from Zope Corporation are standing by. Also, our long time friends and sponsors at HP/Compaq have re-iterated their ongoing offer for hosting a series of Unigroup Field Trip meetings throughout the year. As many of you know, our last meeting at HP was a great hit, for both HP and Unigroup! Many Unigroup members have been looking forward to our next meeting at HP (and we have already been talking to potential HP speakers). Unigroup is also setting up some sort of "Solaris 10 Launch Event" with Sun, perhaps a Field Trip meeting, but we don't know yet. We have already made contact with Sun technical staff in NYC! Main Presentation Introduction: ------------------------------- Background for IBM's AIX: AIX is IBM's commercial UNIX operating system, based originally on UNIX SVR3.2 source code, that was introduced in the mid-1980s with IBM's initial RISC-based systems known as the RT-PC. AIX Version 3, with substantial IBM enhancements, was launched in 1990 to support a full line of new systems known as the RISC System/6000. In a collaboration with Intel, SCO, Sequent and others known as Project Monterey, IBM introduced a new version of AIX in the 2000 timeframe that was developed to support both IBM's RISC systems and systems based on Intel's 64-bit Itanium processor family. The AIX release for Itanium-based systems did not progress beyond initial beta deliveries, however, since continued delays in production availability of Itanium systems eroded the enthusiasm and critical solution support of partners and ISVs, while industry focus shifted toward the substantial growth and momentum of Linux on 32-bit Intel systems. AIXL, with an 'L' added to the formal product name to denote a priority for interoperability with Linux-based environments, was then refocused solely on systems based on IBM's 64-bit POWER processors, supporting what is known today as the IBM eServer pSeries product line. Currently, AIX is the fastest growing UNIX operating system environment in the UNIX server market, supporting seven consecutive quarters of revenue and market share growth by IBM's pSeries systems worldwide. ** Unigroup would like to thank the following individuals, in addition to our speaker, for helping us set up this meeting: - Jim Gleason of the IBM Linux Cluster Group, and NYLUG. - Dan Dantzic of the IBM Linux Center of Competence. Jim put us in touch with Dan, and Dan is our host at IBM for this meeting. Dan is the Program Manager for the IBM Linux Center of Competence (our meeting location). ------------------------------------------------------------------- SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS: --------------------- * IN ORDER TO PASS THROUGH SECURITY, WE NEED YOU TO RSVP * PRIOR TO THE MEETING DAY, SO WE CAN GET YOUR NAME ON THE ATTENDEE * LIST. ADVANCE REGISTRATION AND PHOTO ID IS REQUIRED! * RSVP DEADLINE 28-APR-2004 16:00. <<<< PAY ATTENTION, DEADLINE! * Keep an eye out on the deadline date and time, as it may change. Please RSVP if you know you are attending or if you think you may be attending. This will help us arrange for a letter to security for all of Unigroup. It will also help us to determine the correct amount of food and refreshments. To REGISTER for this event, please RSVP by: a) If at all possible, please use the Unigroup Registration Page: http://www.unigroup.org/unigroup-rsvp.html This will allow us to have some automation in the RSVP process. b) If you must Email us, send an EMail containing the FIRST and LAST NAMEs of the persons attending to the Unigroup RSVP address: unigroup-rsvp@unigroup.org The Email subject should start with "RSVP". You may optionally include your contact phone number (that day) or other current information. DO NOT simply reply to this Email, sending us back the entire announcement (we already have it); leaving the subject as it was, and NOT containing the phrase "RSVP" as requested. In that case, your message just looks like failed mail and it makes it impossible to automate the RSVP process and get you registered for our event. ALSO: Do NOT give us an Email address which is over quota and cannot receive any new Email. This causes us to receive bounces from your address when we send out the RSVP-ACKs. You must have a working and valid Email address in order to get on the Unigroup Meeting Attendee List which will grant you access to our meetings. Be sure to proof-read your Email address before submitting the RSVP request. >>> AND: Do NOT give us an Email address which has anti-spam processing requiring our automated shell scripts to reply to your mail servers or visit a web page... THAT WILL _NOT_ HAPPEN! Be sure to add Unigroup to your "allow" lists! Please continue to check the Unigroup web site: http://www.unigroup.org for any last minute updates concerning this meeting. Please check your Email for any last minute announcements prior to the meeting. Note that only the Attendee First and Last Names will be provided to Security. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Outline of the Main Presentation: --------------------------------- AIX Session Abstract: This session will review the history and evolution of IBM's AIX operating system, discuss key AIX technologies and design features, provide a glimpse of what's coming in the future roadmap, and address IBM's strategic positioning of AIX and Linux together in the UNIX market.
