I have installed a copy of Phat Linux on my Dell Latitude Laptop.
The machine has NT 4.0, 128 MB RAM. Atempting to start Phat Linux by executing (by double clicking) the 'linux.bat' results in the following message. Appreciate any help, Cheers, Harry. __________________________________________________ ___________________ D:\PHAT>loadlin vmlinuz initrd=ramdisk.gz mem=128M LOADLIN v1.6 (C) 1994..1996 Hans Lermen <lermen@elserv.ffm.fgan.de> CPU is in V86-mode (may be WINDOWS, EMM386, QEMM, 386MAX, ...) You need pure 386/486 real mode or a VCPI server to boot Linux VCPI is supported by most EMS drivers (if EMS is enabled), but never under WINDOWS-3.1 or WINDOWS'95. (However, real DOS-Mode of WINDOWS'95 can have EMS driver with VCPI) If loading via VCPI you also MUST have: 1. An interceptable setup-code (see MANUAL.TXT) 2. Identical Physical-to-Virtual mapping for the first 640 Kbytes Your current DOS/CPU configuration is: load buffer size: 0x00000000 , setup buffer size: 0x3E00 total memory: 0x08000000 CPU is in V86 mode SetupIntercept: NO stat2: cpu_V86, but no VCPI available (check aborted) input params (size 0x0022): vmlinuz initrd=ramdisk.gz mem=128M LOADLIN started from DOS-prompt WARNING: Not enough free memory (load buffer size) D:\PHAT>echo Phat Linux failed to load Phat Linux failed to load D:\PHAT>pause Press any key to continue . . . |

It is telling the truth. NT runs in the Intel "protected mode", which means that NT can prevent another program from taking over the hardware. DOS uses the "real mode", which will allow any program to take over the hardware. You need to boot Phat from DOS, not DOS-under-NT. But if your aims is to try out Linux without disturbing your NT install, I suggest Knoppix. It boots and runs directly from a CD and does not touch your hard disk. <http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/> -- -| Bob Hauck -| To Whom You Are Speaking -| http://www.haucks.org/ |
