Default Solaris ifconfig -a hang

Running ifconfig -a works fine on the console, however running it
when logged into the machine over the network results in the network
"hanging" for a period of time (10 - 30 minutes) before recovering.

This is using Solaris 9 x86 with pfil 2.6 / 4.1.7, however I've
seen it with other combinations of versions.

Thoughts / suggestions?
