Thank you very much. That solves my immediate problem. Surprisingly this step is only mentioned in passing in the install documentation (http://www.courier-mta.org/install.html) under "Post-installation checks". It sould be nice if this were stated more explicitly somewhere. It would also be very nice if courier could be configured to make the non-existent maildirs for authenticated users (using the maildir supplied by the auth module) both when first delivering mail to an account and when first logging into an account from sqwebmail, and probably the other mail access interfaces as well.
