yes, I appear to get the correct content from the cat.

I did the following twice:

I got a list of about 15 messages that were listed together one after
the other in the mail client. I looked at each one and wrote down
its message id (exim MTA) and then grep'ed that ID in the mailstore
to identify which file name was with with message. I did a cat to
makes sure I was right.

I then did the delete and purge. I then started clicking on the
messages. Sometimes it starts with the first message after the
deleted one and sometimes it starts 5 or 6 down the list. But I was
able to start at the one that was showing up wrong and cat it on
disk on the nfs client and it still had the correct data in it. So
either the mail client or courier seems to be messing up.

Will try and get the same tests done in Thunderbird to see if the
problem is the exact same symptoms or just close enough to confuse me...

I built it from source. I only use ports for "system level" tools
like compilers, cvs, editors, etc. All my "application level" stuff
I build from source :-)

A quick look at the INSTALL file in the source make me think that
this FAM stuff or its replacement is not on by default (?)
