Sam is right (he wrote Courier so he usually is), you really should be
using a newer version. I also recommend turning LDAPS off until you've
got it working, then adding the SSL layer, having to many variables at
once makes troubleshooting difficult. My guess is that your OpenLDAP
client on your Courier server has not been configured to accept the SSL
Certificate of your LDAP Server. I can resolve this on my machine by
adding:

TLS_REQCERT never

to ldap.conf
