Quite a bit.

It makes sure that all necessary libraries are present.

It prevents you from accidentally overwriting files installed by some oth=

package on your system. And it will also prevent some other package, tha=

installed later, from overwriting and blowing away any file installed by=20
this package.

It automatically records all dependencies needed by the package, thus=20
preventing you from accidentally removing a required library or a module,=20
and breaking everything. A subsequent upgrade to a new release of WS wil=

automatically install any legacy compatibility packages that may be=20
required, and are avialble.

It automatically installs all necessary startup and shutdown scripts.
