It's part of the maildir format itself. Each message is a separate file
with a unique filename. At the end of the filename there are a number
of possible "flags" which can be added. Changing the flags is as easy
as changing the filename.

Check out "http://cr.yp.to/proto/maildir.html" for an explanation of how
the filenames work, what the flags are, and the order, etc. of how you
add them.
