Ok,
well, i finally got time to get back to this....
From your suggestions (thanks) I've installed mysql-devel, mysql-client
and mysql-shared as well as the base server install.

Now when i configure, it finds the mysql_config, but now it's
complaining about mysql-connect:

configure:24081: checking for mysql_config
configure:24099: found /usr/bin/mysql_config
configure:24111: result: /usr/bin/mysql_config
configure:24135: checking for mysql_connect

-lmysqlclient -lz -lcrypt -lnsl -lm -lc -lnss_files -lnss_dns -lresolv
-lc -lnss_files -lnss_dns -lresolv >&5
/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i486-slackware-linux/3.3.6/../../../../i486-slackware-linux/bin/ld:
cannot find -lz

Am I still missing a package or something?
