I've also had trouble with Courier and Thunderbird. Although Peter Ford's
error description indicates a different problem than the one I
experienced (perhaps related to gamin/fam differences), I urge people with
Courier+Thunderbird problems to try upgrading Thunderbird to a nightly
build of Thunderbird and see if it changes things.

At one network which I'm involved with, it seems that using a very recent
Thunderbird (a nightly build) makes a difference. My assumption is that
the following bug-fix could be involved:
