You can also use telnet and 'openssl s_client' and do it by hand. It
will require you to learn the actual commands for the protocols (smtp,
pop3, imap, etc.) but those are *incredibly* useful skills to have. And
they work from anywhere, any machine, any OS (at least telnet does).

A week ago I was walking into my church for the service when the
secretary flagged me down saying that they had major email problems.
(Computers not working on Resurrection Sunday seems somehow WRONG to me;
but I digress!) :-) I was able to sit down at her Windows 2000 machine,
telnet into the ISP's pop3 and smtp services, issue a few commands and
see what the problem was. If you want to troubleshoot email then
knowing how to interact with the services in a telnet session is
invaluable, I find.
