Oh, well. I saw a potential problem before it even occured, so I asked.
You answered, so I when I installed I paid attention to this simple
detail and adjusted the gid, forgetting the uid on that very same line.
For the benefit of the next idi^W overworked and tired admin, here's
the log:

Mar 7 06:49:51 mail01 courierd: queuelo=200, queuehi=400
Mar 7 06:49:51 mail01 courierd: Purging /var/spool/courier/msgq
Mar 7 06:49:51 mail01 courierd: Purging /var/spool/courier/msgs
Mar 7 06:49:51 mail01 courierd: No such file or directory
Mar 7 06:49:51 mail01 courierd: ABNORMAL TERMINATION, exit status: 1
Mar 7 06:49:51 mail01 courierd: Will restart in 60 seconds

If you see this, check that your courier uid/gid are the same as
those that courier was compiled with before you spend hours stracing
for ghosts. Duh.
