Regardless of the http server, you can also create a redirector at the
root. The upside is this always works, the downside is that all it will
do is redirect to http://www.mail.example.com/cgi-bin/webmail, but at
least your visitors didn't have to type the whole thing in...

There are multiple ways to do redirects, such as pushing headers, meta
tags, javascript, etc. The easiest (and ugliest) is META tags. You can
read more about it at http://www.pageresource.com/html/metref.htm To
have the redirection almost instantaneously, you can use a refresh time
of 0 seconds.

Another benefit of this is that you can enter the URL as
https://www.mail.example.com/cgi-bin/webmail as long as it's in the path
for the SSL host (can't name-based virtual host multiple SSL sites...).
This could be a somewhat-gentle reminder to use SSL for email.

So, on the server where I do this, I have an index.html that does
nothing but redirect to my https webmail site.
