Chuck,

I was seeing this. I noticed in the logs that Thunderbird is trying first to log in using MD5/CRAM and failing (because I had not enabled that capability in my Courier installation), and then trying PLAIN auth. I couldn't figure out how to make Thunderbird not try MD5/CRAM first, so I got rid of the delay by simply telling Thunderbird not to authenticate for SMTP, which works fine for me since I am inside a protected intranet that I've configured Courier esmtpd to allow unauthenticated relaying for.
