Subject: MARC msg 'Re BIND Upgrade'
Date: Fri, 21 May 2004 15:35:57 +0530 Hi all, I am trying to follow up on an old thread. My OS is RH 6.x, I have installed bind 9.2.4x and have put links to some of the files and it seems to work well. Can I delete the balance files in /usr/sbin " named-xfer ndc irpd named-bootconf dnskeygen " I have not made any links to them. [root@dhamma /root]# ls -tral /usr/sbin -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1956666 Aug 25 2002 named.8.3.3 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1280868 Aug 25 2002 named-xfer -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 185500 Aug 25 2002 ndc -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1204864 Aug 25 2002 irpd -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 7627 Aug 25 2002 named-bootconf -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 507263 Aug 25 2002 dnskeygen lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 21 Jun 8 12:46 named -> /usr/local/sbin/named [root@dhamma /root]# ls -tral /usr/local/sbin lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 Apr 2 2000 qmail -> /etc/rc.d/init.d/qmail -rwxr-xr-x 2 root root 3325448 May 21 14:31 named -rwxr-xr-x 2 root root 3325448 May 21 14:31 lwresd -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 628860 May 21 14:31 rndc -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 831708 May 21 14:31 rndc-confgen -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 886435 May 21 14:31 dnssec-keygen -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2396511 May 21 14:31 dnssec-makekeyset -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2396716 May 21 14:31 dnssec-signkey -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2450008 May 21 14:31 dnssec-signzone -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 930130 May 21 14:31 named-checkconf -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2382948 May 21 14:31 named-checkzone -------------------------------------------- and in /usr/bin "addr mkservdb" They also have no links to them. The balance which are renamed old files "nslookup.8.3.3 dig.8.3.3 dnsquery host.8.3.3 nsupdate.8.3.3" can ofcause go. (1) , which i usually prefer, has the advantage that all startupscrips will continue to work, disadvantage that any upograde might overwrite the binaries. Keeping the compile-directory and install script will be handy in that case. (2) has the advantage that the old binaries is untouched, but you have to edit startup scripts. Also in this case an upgrade might screw your setup by overwriting your startup scripts. Between a rock and a hard place you have to choose one. </quote> Thank you for any help Mettavihari -- A saying of the Buddha from http://metta.lk/ An evil deed is better not done: a misdeed torments one hereafter.
