Default Apache slow to respond

Hello, all.

I have a Red Hat 9 web server running Apache 2 in a default install.
Here are the hardware stats:

PIII 550
380MB Ram
40 G IDE drive
10/100 3Com NIC
RR cable net access

Here's my problem, I go to my web site and it takes 5 - 8 seconds to
load. As soon as the page loads, any other page request is loaded
really fast (less then a second). It doesn't matter if I use the FQDN
or my web server's local IP. So it doesn't look to be DNS related. I
checked the BIOS settings for the box (which is a dell optiplex) and
verified that the hardware is not being powered down for power
savings. The only thing I can think of is that there is some setting
inside RH 9 that powers down the drive but for the life of me I can't
find it. I tried the documentation and couldn't find the info I need
even though I'm sure it's there. I also tried to search the
newsgroups and didn't see an old post related to this topic that would
help.

Could anyone help me out? I'm sure it's a simple setting somewhere
but I just can't find the blasted thing. Any help I could get I would
appreciate very much.

Thanks

Ken

try going to the site by IP, rather than domain, like
http://192.168.1.1/~mysite or whatever, I'd be willing to be, that it's
hanging on the DNS query.

Jim:

Thanks for your response, but as stated in the original msg, going to my
domain or going to my local IP doesn't matter. The first page load is slow
either way. I specifically made sure that it isn't a dns issue. The slow
response time absolutely happens without me leaving my lan. I would expect
it to be a system specific issue. I've taken the hardware settings (from
bios) out of the equation since I verified that there is no power-down
enabled for the drives or anything else. I can ping the server's IP and get
back a response quickly but the web page I load next is still really slow.
I just don't know Linux (or maybe Apache) well enough to troubleshoot this
problem myself. Searching newsgroups via google hasn't helped, either. I'm
hoping that someone here would be able to impart some pearls of linux wisdom
on me!

Thanks

ken

There are a couple of possibilities, one, that Apache doesn't have a
process ready to handle the request, but unless the site is very busy
otherwise (and that doesn't sound like it is the case here) or the stock
config has been changed from the default, then there should be 4 or 5
processess waiting to serve.

try using wget to get the file, rather than a browser,

wget http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/index.html or whatever, and see if that is
faster.

I'd still look at routing info, either DNS, or route. Do you have a
firewall configured? Try dropping all the rules from it for a test.

I would say that you may need to reboot the machine or try restarting the
Apache server. Login as root and type "service httpd restart".
that might fix your problem

PS Redhat does NOT power down ANY drive unless YOU change settings with
hdparm.
