I understand Apache is a webserver. I am interested to know what type
of database works best with Apache.

Why do people have to post such useless replies?
MySQL is free and easy to integrate with Apache and PHP

Which database that you know most? You can use either MySQL or
Postgresql.
I use Perl API and MySQL, it is very easy to implement though, but if
you experience in other scripting language, it will not make much
different. I recommand you google MySQL and Perl, to get more
information.
