difference between TransferLog and CustomLog

Hi,
I don't understant the difference from TransferLog and CustomLog.
What is the role of TransferLog.
Can I use only CustomLog with my LogFormat without TransferLog?

For rotelog i use apache rotatelog, but this can zip or overwrite the log
after the roll?
