Hi, I was just wondering if anyone could help me to configure my home
machine to run as a test server for PHP using MySQL and Apache. I am running WinXP pro and I would really appreciate some help. (I'm trying to learn PHP before paying the moola for a host, only to make a fool of myself while trying to learn PHP. I don't see any logic in paying for time to learn, when I could do it for free at home and then pay for a host...) I would be very thankful if you would imagine that I had just downloaded the files from their appropriate sites, and haven't even opened them yet. A walkthrough of the installation etc... The main part I've been having trouble with is editing the httpd.conf file for Apache;)Any help would be great!!! -Josh PS: I'm 15 now and I'd like to learn the basics before I'm 16 in June. |

You are young enough, then, to be able to avoid indoctrination by Microsoft and will be able to learn how to use a *real* OS. My suggestion is this: * Download (or buy on CD) a Linux Distro. Almost any one will do, though I'm partial to RedHat/Fedora. * Install distro. * Use/Learn PHP. If you are to afraid to break away from Windows, or you like to play games and think you require Windows, try dual-boot. It is really quite easy to set up. Otherwise, drop Windows. I realize this answer is almost not PHP related at all, but I have used Windows (I am a MCSE, for criminy's sake) and I have used Linux (I also am a RHCE) and Linux is a better web development environment. At least for PHP development. And *definitely* better on a budget! Better included tools, better flexibility, better configurability.... Of course, YMMV. And better is in the eye of the beholder and all that. -- Jeffrey D. Silverman | jeffrey AT jhu DOT edu Website | http://www.wse.jhu.edu/newtnotes/ |
