Max,

BSMTP is the client side of a standard SMTP protocol, stored on a file, and assumes that all server responses to SMTP commands will be favorable. The SMTP is documented in rfc2821. Amavisd-new uses a subset of SMTP commands for BSMTP purpose, although in principle new SMTP features may become useful some day, like authentication. Not to forget the rfc2821 dot-stuffing, which is used in BSMTP too.
