DOS carriage returns gives extra blank lines

Recently replaced s*ndmail with qmail, all is well except I'm getting
reports that some messages sent appear to have a blank line between each
line of text.

I've traced this to the use of /var/qmail/bin/sendmail -t < FILE, where
FILE is in DOS format i.e. newline+carriage return on each line. Looking
in the logs, qmail shows that the message with DOS CR is bigger, i.e. it
appears to be passing the DOS CR to the remote mailer, compared to an
identicial message without DOS CR's. Our platform is RedHat 7.2

If qmail is the remote mailer, then the problem doesn't occur. S*ndmail
doesn't have this problem.

Has anyone seen this problem before or and if so is there a fix?
