I am trying to setup SMTP AUTH to avoid being an open relay. I applied
the patch I found on qmail.org and after recompiling and starting up qmail again it doesn't look like it's requiring me to authenticiate when sending mail. (in Outlook I unchecked "my smtp server requires me to log on" and sent a message that went through). I feel like I'm missing a step but I can't find anything in the documentation. Is there something I'm supposed to configure to get SMTP AUTH to work or do you just recompile and it's there? Any help appreciated, I'm new to qmail and mail servers in general and was so proud I got everything up and working, only to be stumped by this :). -brad brad[]outofstep.org |

You may want to try running through the installation over at
http://www.qmailrocks.org. The installation they have includes smtp auth. I installed it on my system and it works great. There is one case allowing user to send mail even the qmail is patched with
authentication. That is when sending with the recipient address on your domain (anything send to your domain), it will work. So If you try to send to yourself, it will be successful even no authentication provided. And, if you set 192.:allow (suppose your network segment is 192.*.*.* ) from your tcp.smtp, it will still works. So doint test remotely is a good idea.
