Default SASL and Postfix

I am trying to set up simple SMTP AUTH on a Redhat9 box running Postfix
1.1.15 and cyrus-sasl. I followed the instructions at
http://postfix.state-of-mind.de/patr...tter/smtpauth/
and everything seems set up properly. However, when I telnet in and do
AUTH PLAIN <base64junk>
(with a proper UNIX username/password Base64 encoded, as per the
instructions on the site), I get an Authentication Failed warning.

I am getting sort of fed up with SMTP AUTH, but I have to be able to use
it, so any insight on this problem would be appreciated. Have a nice day,

cLiNt

ever tried to telnet in and enter a "EHLO localhost"?
you should get a list a "parameters" from your server.
one line should say something like "250 AUTH...." (for my server it's LOGIN
PLAIN )
maybe AUTH PLAIN isn't installed/configured with your postfix.
I had the same problem and in my case installation of the apropriate packet
was the solution.
