Default how to replace sendmail by exim?

I was trying to replace sendmail by exim on a redhat el3 server. My
server (production system) is running sendmail. I got all the exim rpm
on it. As I tried to install the exim rpm, it said /etc/aliases file
was in conflict with that in the sendmail package. It stopped there.
Could anyone recommend steps and procedure to replace sendmail by exim
on redhat? I did some google on this topic but was not able to find
anything close to a roadmap for this kind of operation.
Thanks for your help.
