If the smarthost requires authentication it will state this with an "AUTH" in its answer to your initiating EHLO command. Unfortunately I have no experience of mail servers and I am finding that the documentation is too cryptic to be of any use and I am unable to decipher it. I really need a beginners guide to exim configuration, as opposed to a documentation that tells me the internal workings of the server. Ideally, I need to chat to someone who knows how to use this beast.
