Just fire a "dpkg-reconfigure exim", choose option number two and
declare your isp's mail server as "smarthost".

If the smarthost requires authentication it will state this with an
"AUTH" in its answer to your initiating EHLO command.

Christian

How can I configure this from the /etc/exim/exim.conf file?

I do not wish to use dpkg for this.

Mark.

This file contains lots of hints and explanations. The exim specs (see
<http://www.exim.org> or one of its mirrors) will be helpful, too.

Yeah. I have these already. Unfortunately I have no experience of mail servers
and I am finding that the documentation is too cryptic to be of any use and I
am unable to decipher it.

I really need a beginners guide to exim configuration, as opposed to a
documentation that tells me the internal workings of the server.

Ideally, I need to chat to someone who knows how to use this beast.

Regards,

Mark.
