how to get info from a Quake2 server with PHP?

For good old time sake I'm setting up a Quake2 server with some friends
and we would like to have actual stats.
Since I'm the only one who has some experience with PHP they asked me to
write a script.

Please where do I start?
I checked google, but did not find anything that i reckognised as being
useful (for this purpose : ).

I guess I have use fsockopen (udp://??????), but some experiments didn't
give any responses from the server, so I don't know how to continue.

Does anyone know of any available scripts or can I get some help with
writing my own?
