OK, I've followed these groups for several days, I've tried Googling,
but it's still not clear to me: why are there four different English-language PHP newsgroups? Is there some difference in subject matter which has so far eluded me? Or is it just one of those historical accidents which afflicts Usenet from time to time? -- Stephen Poley |

The only englishlanguaged that isn't a general php newsgroup is alt.php.sql which is for php/sql related stuff... but of course there are people who uses it as a general php newsgroup as some thinks that comp.sys.linux.x be a general linux newsgroup instead of understanding that the X is for Xwindows. |

Obviously you have to prefer comp.lang.php :-) -- "Success is not what you achieve, but it is what you die for" If you live in USA, please support John Edwards. Email: rrjanbiah-at-Y!com |

There seems little point in using alt groups when there is a "big 8" group available. I guess the alt groups just came first, and haven't dried up yet. While php.general seems to attract very little traffic. Having people spread over four groups just dilutes the available knowledge, so it would seem better if everyone did congregate in comp.lang.php. But trying to organise Usenet makes herding cats seem simple by comparison, so I'm not holding my breath. ;-) -- Stephen Poley |

That being said the first place I look is "general", since that's going to be the most active. David |
