Thanks, Bob, but any suggestions are welcome. The reason I'm in this
newsgroup, though, is that if I use my browser to go to the perl script
directly, I get the results I'm expecting. It's when I try to use the
script in an HTML page that it goes to hell in a hand basket. I'll check
into the comp.lang.perl.misc newsgroup, too. In the mean time I've decided
to try and upgrade the Apache server to the pre-compiled version 2.2.4 for
Solaris 8 but I'm having trouble with the required patch 112439-02 which is
the random service that SSL needs.

If nothing else, this is proving to be one hell of a learning experience!

As for your remaining suggestions, I've printed them out and will look into
how they can affect my script later. I appreciate your suggestions a lot!
