Clean install, FreeBSD 4.9 Stable

On reboot avalanche of mail downloaded to MUA (Netscape)
Subsequent mail retrieval attempts ==>
"Connection to server econ.com timed out"

tried fiddling w/ timeout* values in control directory to no avail

Do the logs for qmail have to be explicitly set up?
Noticed in Levine's book that a directory

mkdir /var/qmail/supervise/qmail/pop3d/log/main

is required, but could not find any reference to it th LWQ online doc
