Take a look into this directory. It should contain a script called
"exim.sh" or similar that is responsible for starting and stopping the
exim daemon.

IMO there should be a file somewhere in /etc/mail that defines all the
"calls" to the MTA. Maybe the entries still point to sendmail and not
yet towards your exim binary?

OK, that's the exim start script.
Have you tried testing your exim configuration using exim's option
"-bt"? Take a look at "man exim" for further information.
