I faced the same problem on my DELL Inspiron 4150; try adding:
smsc-ircc2
to /etc/modules-2.6 (kernel 2.6.x requires upgrading module-init-tools)
and, or
smc-ircc
to your /etc/modules for kernel version 2.4.x.
