What exactly do you mean by "disabling" ipv6 in the kernel?

You could remove the ipv6 module from /lib/modules/<version>/ .
Or you could add "IPV6INIT=no" to /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
(assuming you are using eth0).
Or you could compile a kernel without ipv6.
