And did it work?

Look at the pinning of the two ends of the cable. If they are not the
same (one starts with green, the other orange), then its a crossover
cable.

Is there a link? Do the NICs have a link-light on? What is the output of
mii-tool. That should tell you for sure if there is a link, and what
type it is, whether its been autonegotiated etc.
