IIRC the value of the query string parameter needs to be
url-encoded. Try -aka test;-)-:
RewrtieMap escape int:escape
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule ^([^/]*)/$ index.php?x=%{escape:$1} [L]
